Start with the reading experience you want
Make a small test set: a long article, a reference you revisit and something you want to discuss later. Read, annotate and retrieve each one. Your preferred workflow should make those repeated actions comfortable, without requiring you to adopt features you will rarely use.
Instapaper documents browser extensions for Chrome, Firefox and Safari, including web highlighting. Its official Obsidian plugin syncs highlights and notes. If either workflow matters to you, test it as part of the decision (extension announcement, connected accounts).
Compare paid features without rounding away details
Instapaper Premium costs $5.99 per month or $59.99 per year on its pricing page. Premium includes full-text search, unlimited highlighting, AI voices and text-to-speech playlists on mobile. Free highlighting is limited (Premium, highlighting documentation).
KnowMan Free includes unlimited saving, full-text search, automatic organization, highlights and annotations without limits, Memories and AI assistant connection. Pro costs $12.99 a month or $99 a year. Compare the features you will use at the billing period you intend to choose.
Summaries and organization already belong in the comparison
Instapaper launched summaries with five per month for Free users and unlimited summaries for Premium. Its API documentation lists folders and tags. These are documented capabilities, so the decision should not depend on assuming summaries or tags are missing (summary announcement, API documentation).
KnowMan organizes articles automatically on Free. Pro adds AI article summaries and ingestion rules for feeds and newsletters. To evaluate that combination, choose sources you would normally save and check whether their organization helps you retrieve them later.
Try a question that needs a source
KnowMan reads the full content of saved articles. Ask answers draw from your reading and include citations you can open to check the claim. Free includes five questions a day; Pro removes that daily limit. Search by meaning is Pro, while Free uses keyword search.
A useful test is a question you would ask during real work: which argument supports a proposal, what a source said about a constraint or why you preferred an approach. Inspect the answer and its evidence. Decide whether that sequence helps you work.
Keep your reasoning available to agents
KnowMan Memories store decisions and their reasons beside the reading behind them. Record the conclusion you want to carry forward, then use it when the subject returns. The value to test is continuity between research, a decision and the next task.
Claude, Codex, Cursor and your own MCP agents can use six tools: kb_search, kb_get_item, kb_ask, kb_memories, kb_recent and kb_save. Agents can read Memories but cannot write them. They can search your knowledge base, inspect sources and save new links with the permissions you choose.
Move carefully and choose your destinations
KnowMan lists Instapaper as an import source. That does not establish which export format or fields will transfer. If you have an export file, keep the original, confirm the importer accepts it and inspect representative items before relying on a complete migration.
KnowMan Pro exports to Obsidian, Logseq and EPUB. Its feeds, newsletters and ingestion rules are also Pro features. Every new account gets 14 days of Pro without a credit card, then can stay on Free and keep its saves. Use that time to check capture, questions, Memories and export against your actual needs.
